Ok ill start off by saying that I have never seen an episode of Star Trek in its entirety nor have I see any of the other movies. I do know that Treckies dont like being called Treckies. They instead use the term Trecker according to my old co worker Brian.
So JJ Abrams brings us this prequal of star fleet? Ya. Well I dont like Abrams. Lost sucks as did MI:III and Cloverfield. So Star Trek is his newest project and I made sure to see it as a Matinee bc im still unemployed. I hear this movie spent over 100Million on the special effects alone and I wouldnt doubt it seeing that whole thing was green screen and I mean the WHOLE thing. There were also no big name actors outside Eric Bana to take up payroll (Winona Ryder plays Spocks mom but thats it. She is in the movie for about 3 minutes.) I know this because the star fleet school is not star fleet it is in fact my school CSUN (Cal State University Northridge). They shot it here last spring break all hush hush. So the ground and landmarks are real but everything was different in the background and they even changed the color of the school library.
ok so this is a prequal where all of your favorite Star Trek characters meet up and by chance get their jobs. Its not too detailed with anyones past except for Kirk’s and Spock’s. So they all meet at CSUN and well from what I understand the story line in this movie fucks up the star trek story line. The fans in the theatre were’nt so happy bc everything they have known and loved is now going to be different for all the sequals. I guess JJ is trying to hit a new generation of Treckers. But the movie was typical JJ. All hype. It was ok. Not worth the $15 to see in IMAX thank God i only spent $9 w/ my studnet discount. I mean it wasnt bad it just wasnt great. I think that going into it with an unbiased opinion of star trek bc I have no history of it was a good idea. The movie had limited action. There were a few space explosion scenes but nothing like you would see in a star wars movie where there are ships flying and blasting. The hand to hand fight scenes were EXTREMELY small and limited. The camera work was nice and the CG was great but really nothing stood out.
I would say wait for the Blu Ray on this one.
next week is Angels and Demons followed by Terminator Salvation
